I did an AAA search for Doubletree alternatives in downtown Portland.  The cheapest I found was Days Inn.  It should be within easy walking distance.  It also has continental breakfast included and I think the off street parking was free vs the $18 a day at Doubletree.  I am sure there are multiple Days Inn places in Portland so make sure you have the one that is near downtown and not at the airport.
