Another thing about taking your dog...I met a woman who was hiking  
with her dog and she told us not to tell anybody we saw her because  
she was trying to make someone believe she was no longer hiking the  
trail because she was getting harassed for hiking with her dog and  
planning to find out where on the trail she was so she could stalk  
her at a trailhead or road crossing. So if you bring a dog you might  
have to deal with upset people who want to harass you about it. That  
alone might not be worth it.
