Good evening, Stephen,

Last year I had an imposed experiment in hiking part of N. California
without maps or the Guidebook. I had a resupply box at Belden Town with
maps or the Guidebook pages from there to Castella, but Belden was under
siege by two wildland fires and I, like most last year, had to shuttle ahead
to Chester and resume hiking at Rt. 36. I continued on without the data,
resupplying with only food at Old Station. I didn't resupply at Burney
Falls, I only stopped for a few treats. I did have a few prints of
1:100,000 overview maps which helped for perspective.

It was early July and there weren't many other hikers about. I don't
recommend such an exercise, but I muddled through without a problem mainly
because I had studied the maps ahead of time and had a good feel for what
was ahead.

Hat Creek Rim is pretty easy now with two caches: Firefly's Cache-44 and
the large Cache-22 further north. From there into S. Oregon water is
reasonably available. In Oregon, there is a dry stretch north of Crater
Lake to Thielsen Creek, and again from there to Summit Lake. From there on
to Canada water is much less of a problem.

That's not the preferred plan, but can work in a pinch particularly if other
hikers are around.
