On the PCT I used trail runners for the entire hike: desert, snow,  
rain, ...

No it isn't crazy. I did get some cold feet hiking up Muir Pass,
not because of the snow but because my feet got wet in streams and
runoff.  You might consider some insulated socks (e.g. Sealskins).
Switching socks at break time helps.  Let the pair your aren't
wearing dry off on the back of your pack.  Always keep a dry pair
of socks for camp at night and don't let socks get too close to the
fire...
