Here's a great article with some tips on sipping untreated water in the
backcountry.
How to do it, and how NOT to.

My conclusion is you cannot safely assess streams & brooks & springs you
cross without hiking pretty upstream for a careful look.

Even a spring coming out of the ground could come from a contaminated source
above ground upstream & not visible near your collection site.

When you're camping in the same spot for several days this may be more
practical.

These are some good tips though.
