My list from memory (I think I got it from Scouting). I break it down
into categories for easier retention:

To wear:
- rain protection
- sun protection
- extra clothing
To consume:
- extra foot
- extra water
Tools:
- knife
- first aid kit
Light the way:
- flashlight/headlamp
- matches and fire starter
- map and compass

TP makes 11.

For the rest of my gear, I do it by room:
Kitchen - stove, cookware.
Bathroom - TP, soap, medications.
Closet - clothing.
Bedroom - shelter, sleeping bag and pad.

Most of this is in one box in the closet so I don't even need a list, I
just review and make sure it's adequate. I have a separate box for
winter snow trips with the avy beacon, probes, gaiters, crampons, etc.
