According to dictionary.com...


Scree is "a steep mass of detritus on the side of a mountain"


("detritus" is "rock in small particles or other material worn or broken away from a mass, as by the action of water or glacial ice.)


Talus is "a sloping mass of rocky fragments at the base of a cliff".


So, apparently, the only difference is where the rocks are.
