Sean,
That is a great idea.  I preffere to hike in a light  cotton t-shirt in warm weather.  I would reccomend the tagless  ones if buying new.  A t-shirt would last me about 2-3 week even with some washing in town and then it would be pretty well stained where the sholder straps and hipbelt contacted it and so I would throw it away.  I cheeped out/recycled my supply by getting them from the thrift store for 25-50 cents each ( not tagless but with cool old logo's etc).
