You mentioned that the sleeves on your rainwear were soaked and did not shed water.  This, I learned while working at REI is typical of nylon rain gear.  It has to do with the surface coating on the nylon called DWR.

Check out this website and it might save you some money as you may be able to restore your jacket back to its original water repellancy.
