[pct-l] The State of Jefferson

(OK, this is getting a bit off topic, except that it's part of the history of an area through which the PCT passes...so...)

Sheesh...I forgot about Jefferson! OK, the only OFFICIAL state sandwiched in between WA and CA. The one with an actual star on the flag. And Malachi, as a Canadian, kindly pointed out to me that "eh" even has regional variations. I give up! :)

Funny thing about that pipe/bong dream idea... The residents of that area are often painted as being, ahem, a little on the redneck side. Much more so than, say, those darn pot-smoking liberals in Eugene. Yet on the other hand, those Siskyou hillsides are known for an awful lot of illicit farming operations...

For a little about the history of the secessionist movement read http://www.jeffersonstate.com/jeffersonstory.html
And this is from Wikipedia:On November 27, 1941,
a group of young men gained national media attention when, brandishing
hunting rifles for dramatic effect, they stopped traffic on U.S. Route 99
south of Yreka, and handed out copies of a Proclamation of
Independence, stating that the state of Jefferson was in "patriotic
rebellion against the States of California and Oregon" and would
continue to "secede every Thursday until further notice."
The secession movement came to an abrupt end, though not before John
C. Childs of Yreka was inaugurated as the governor of the State of
Jefferson. The first blow was the death of Mayor Gable on December 2, followed five days later by the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7.

***

I really like the part about "seceding every Thursday until further notice".

What happened to it? It never existed. It was a pipe (or maybe a bong) dream of people that thought they were getting the short end of something from the state government.

But that's just my opinion.
