I hiked section A last summer. I started without poles. I limped into
Lake Morena with an injured knee. I then limped my way to Mount Laguna
on the same injured knee. I took two days off in San Diego where I
bought poles. With the poles I was able to hike another 110 miles with
no other knee problems.

I aborted my through hike attempt at Pines to Palms Highway, but I blame
the problems I was having at that point on inadequate training and
inadequate foot care. I would not have made it past Mount Laguna without
poles.
