Specifically, look for plans with a somewhat higher deductible and per
office visit cost and lower coinsurance (the percentage you'd pay after the
deductible is reached) to keep in inexpensive ($50-100), but so that medical
bills wouldn't bury you in a serious emergency.

 

You should also know that assuming you have no income and major assets, if
you were taken to an ER, most ER's charity care programs would cover like
90% of your ER bill. Of course that doesn't include your X-rays, labs,
physicians, drugs, air-lifting, ambulances, whatever, but it does make going
without insurance a viable, although still unwise, option.
