[pct-l] Smart Altimeter/Barometer Devices

I do not work for Suunto or the like.
 
I am pretty confident that the majority of "smart" devices that discern
between altimetric changes and barometric changes do so with logic that
compares the RATE OF CHANGE of pressure.  Weather will change the
pressure at a different rate then hiking up/down a hill.  This is also
why the "smart" devices keep separate logs of pressure changes (based on
the users selection of operational mode) so that it can keep up running
trends for comparison.
 
Even so, the values are not 100% accurate as previously described.  Once
you have personally gathered enough experience with your device and
calibrated that experience against known values you will be able to
understand/predict the possible errors.  (+-5% is probably very
reasonable)
