I don't know of any vendor who would hold off charging your card before shipping; that's not how business is done.

However, most cottage industry vendors have excellent "satisfaction guaranteed" policies that let you return clean, unused, undamaged merchandise for a full refund (less shipping charges)  within 30 to 90 days. That usually means try it at home with all your gear; maybe wear it around the neighborhood to see how it fits/carries. But taking it out on a hike? 

Ask first. See each vendor's site for the exact details of their guarantee.

REI, on the other hand, will take back anything they sold (you must have the invoice or know the date it was purchased so their computer can find it) at any point in time and in any condition.
