You need some type of map. At some point you will get
lost. I'm not talking wander off and die lost, but where is
the trail lost. It is nice to know that you are in the right
valley or on the correct mountain. You can always pick
up the trail later. Points of concern are snow, areas
where a river has washed out the trail. Or my worst one,
road crossings where the trail is offset and not well
marked.
