as im lying on the floor right here, i'd like to share my new foot warming method. its always with you. you'll never forget to bring it. it weighs nothing. intrigued? good. here's how you do it.

lay on your stomach. bend your knees so your feet are up in the air. knees shoulder width apart. now, put your right foot in the crook of your left knee (behind your knee). let your left foot and lower leg close down on your right foot. try it out. alternate for the other foot. it helps to be somewhat flexible. i will demonstrate at the Kickoff. maybe in one of the contests. "useless gear" maybe. i'll name it the "Leapyear Foot Warmer".?

Mama and Chia have requested that I help get the word out that the rumor
they've heard going 'round is false. The Seiad Valley Restaurant has not
burned to
the ground. They're alive and well there and looking forward to early
hikers. Also
still accepting hiker boxes that have the hiker's real name on them.
I repeat, the restaurant did not burn down...
Thanks, all...help spread the word for Mama, O.K.?

Hi Adam,

I use a Steripen and a Katadyn filter and do almost all my hiking in So Cal. I
have come to rely
upon my "collapsible water bucket" and recommend that you consider this as an
essential part of
your gear. It allows me to collect water from nearly any potable water source
and weighs only a
few ounces. The benefits:
1. fast water collection in locations where collection is difficult.
2. keeps my filter cleaner as it's not in the dirt (creek bottom), but in the
bucket.
3. more water volume for other uses, like washing, cooking, etc.
4. easy distribution of the water in my containers, filter or steripen for
purification.

Best success on your hike.

Wes

For the southern portion of the trail (Campo to Kennedy Meadows)
I have a 100 oz res. but it isn't big mouth and to save weight I'm
using Cl tablets. However, what I'm worried about is that most of
the springs in the south need a pump in order to pull the water from
them and that my technique here in KY of just dropping the res. in
the stream is not an option. Can someone help me confirm this and
whether there is another option besides buying a pump.

A friend and I are thinking of hiking from Castella to Seiad in the
third week of June. This is looking like a normal snow year up there.
Does anyone have any experience with that section in a normal snow year?

This came up in a conversation this past Saturday at Trail Fest (fun as always).
My source, John Lyons of Lyons' Pride trail crews) said that time in June should
be clear of most all snow and you should be able to jebber right on through.

are we there yet

While packing my pack I started thinking about the chaffing I
experienced in the Desert. I have hiked almost all of the PCT and
nowhere else on the PCT will you experience such dry air as Southern CA
and chaffing problems. The inside of my thighs were rubbed raw by the
seams of my zip-offs. I wore bike shorts under my pants, and my light
long johns inside out at night. The seams were too painful against my skin.

Also for those testing their sleeping bags at home remember you will be
dropping weight on the trail, shedding your natural insulation. I carry
a 15 degree bag and I love it.

Almost There...............Jollylopper

A brief news item from the Trail Fest volunteer recognition awards dinner:
our own Bill Jeffrey, aka AsABat, was given the Award of Merit for the water
report he so faithfully maintains to help us all. The Award of Merit
recognizes individuals for their work on a particular project that benefits
the organization or the trails community. Also recognized were other
hard-working volunteers that make the trail possible to hike that were
acknowledged and thanked. The PCT wouldn't be the world class trail it is
without them.

He's not the sort to toot his own horn, so I thought I would those of you
who couldn't be there know, and wish AsABat a heartfelt congratulations and
sincere thank you for his contributions. His efforts have made a difference
for many!

L-Rod

Here here. Thank you AsABat for your contribution to the water report. It's

Section C should be nice, if windy and a bit cold, but snow is milting and the
sky is clear.?
?
I was hiking south of that Sunday, from Barrel Springs to Warner Springs.? It
was windy!? ...but worm.? And the flowers!? Oh my god!? The fields of yellow
flowers were everywhere.? Just beautiful!? If you haven't gotten "out there"
yet, it's certainly time to do so.

Indeed. Asabat hands down has the most useful information on the web for PCT
hikers, even though he is an evil water cache stocker. ;)

Congratulations!

No doubt. I couldn't bag on Greg for his psychic 'predictions' and I also
missed my window for ranting against the gathering whos name we do not speak
of.

*sigh*. There's always next year. ;)

Scott putting out similar irresponsible suggestions! (jk, jk, jk!!)
