Greetings AsABat,

I enjoyed reading your Hennesy hammock review. If you
decide to keep working at it, be sure to surf over to
http://www.hamockforums.net. There are a huge number
of rabid and highly inventive hammock users there just
waiting to share techniques.

Many of us have switched to larger tarps for better
rain protection and quilts for insulation. Using a pad
and sleeping bag in hammock often looks to an outside
observer as though one is wrestling an anaconda. There
are techniques to make it work, but it isn't easy! I
find it much more productive to pull a quilt over the
top of me once I'm inside. I'd suggest opening your
sleeping bag and using it as a blanket to try it out.

Under insulation is tricker. Pads work and segmented
pad extenders make it easier (think a long central pad
with wings). Some people have had good luck with down
air mattresses. I find I prefer a down underquilt
suspended outside the hammock. If you are buying them
from the cottage industry hammock gear vendors, they
can get expensive. The quality is excellent and the
down very warm, fluffy, and light, but expect to pay a
few hundreds per quilt. They are worth it, though.

Good luck in your hammock adventures! Feel free to
ping me off list if you have any questions.

There are quite a few hammock reviews at
www.BackpackGearTest.org .
 I've
questioned how a hammock would work for years, and
last year tested a
Hennessey from the perspective of someone who wanted
one to work but
didn't think it would. You can read my review at
