Likewise, I ride Amtrak as well (and over longer distances) and find that
it's great.

Do it, I ride amtrak all the time, and rode amtrak to San Diego from LA (and
before that from Seattle to LA) in 2008 and 2009 and had no trouble, other
than 5 or 10 minutes behind or ahead of schedule.
