I think it is the difference between being a guest and being a customer. If you are staying at a hotel and purchasing meals at a restaurant or store, you are in  'customer mode'. If you are staying with a trail angel, you are in 'guest mode' (or should be).

There are different norms and expectations for those two modes for just about everything (payment for services, long hot showers, monopolizing the TV or phone, time to go to bed, time to get up, time to eat, time to leave, time to check-in, socializing with the host vs. the staff, etc.).

Perhaps 'stressful' isn't the right word to describe the differences but there are differences.  Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that either situation is better than the other, just different.
