Ditto! What Scott said. Your Sierra entry date is dependent upon your knowledge and previous experience on snow. Like a big wall climber in Yosemite, don't push beyond your limits of experience and knowledge without understanding the potential dire consequences.

Either you have experience hiking in snow or you don't.A person with experience hiking/navigating in snow will probably have little concern about leaving early.Someone who has never navigated in a snow choked forest and has never walked any distance on snow, will probably feel the need to wait for it to melt out a bit.April 1st snow conditions in the southern Sierra is a good indication of what your desired start date will be, depending on your abilities.-postholer
