Someone on another forum, I think backpackinglight.com, stated something
obvious that I had completely overlooked about down vs synthetics. The
insulating value of whatever you are using comes from the loft - the air
trapped. You can be just as cold and wet in a fleece jacket as in a down
jacket. The difference is that you can wring the fleece out, put the jacket
back on, and get warm again. Of course, if you have a closed cell foam
jacket other factors come into play.
