Good morning, Supertramp,

While alpine skiers love the fresh, deep snow, for most wilderness travelers
early-season mountain snow is very difficult and time-consuming to
negotiate. I don’t live in the Sierras but I do live in the Cascades where
the PCT on Mt. Hood at 6,000 ft. elevation accumulates an average of 400
inches of seasonal snow -- sometimes over 800 inches – often at a rate of
20-30 inches per snow-day.

Before the snow coalesces you probably will end up wading through 3-5 feet
of fresh fluff regardless of whether of you wear snowshoes, skis, or just
hiking shoes/boots. I suggest you not even consider an early winter
distance hike unless you have lots of direct experience in hiking deep,
early-season mountain snow. I suspect that if you did have lots of direct
experience you wouldn’t be asking the question.
