For what it's worth...when I attempted WA in 2007 (a relatively dry 
year) I started the last week of July, and step on snow (that I 
remember) until Goat Rocks, when I crossed the permanent snowfield at 
the base of Old Snowy, and the trail was in the scree *above* Packwood 
Glacier. This was on Aug. 4 or 5, I think. But I can't tell you what 
things were like that year north of Tacoma Pass...
