One thing I did not see was "plan on where to hitch a ride." Busy roads are better than non busy, increases your chances. Major dead end trail heads are best, I have almost always gotten picked up by the first car I see at places like Onion Valley or Whitney Portal. And I'm a big, scary, ugly looking guy.
