>From MendoRider.   First, I want to say that I agree with all of Trekker's 10 rules but want to add one thing that worked very well for me.
During 2008 and 2009 I rode the PCT from Mexico to Canada on my horse Primo. My approach to resupply was to leave my horse in safe hands (usually prearranged)., and then drive my rig north and cache (bury) my and Primo's food at road crossings. I would usually leave my rig at least 100 miles north. When I was lucky an angel would drive me back to my horse. Often I ended up having to hitch back. When hitching I always used the bright orange 2008 bandana. I used safety pins on all four corners and in the middle to attach my signs ( 16" to18" long x 4" high) - and flash a smile when the vehicle approaches. There are a lot of folks who live neat the PCT who recognize that bandana. I used an old white shower curtain to cut the signs from and made large letters - easy to read. I always brought my knapsack and it was always in plain sight.
