[pct-l] Station Fire

North Fork Ranger Station survived, due to the excellent fire clearance done
by Todd, the CTUC volunteer who has been manning the station for the past 10
years. The situation was aided by the timing of the fire moving through; it
passed through North Fork at night when the fire lays down and burns cooler.
The station is now literally like an island in the middle of charred
nothingness.

Mill Creek Ranger Station, where the PCT crosses Angeles Forest Highway,
didn't fare as well and was lost. So was Camp 16, the prison camp just
south of Mt. Gleason's summit. There were a number of stations lost, and
there were crews out fighting the fire while everything they had was burning
down back at their station.

There is an article in the news about the firefighting inmates at Camp 16.
I've heard stories of PCT hikers being helped by the firefighters at the
camp, even getting to eat in the chow hall that is mentioned in the article.

I just closely studied the map at Inciweb. It looks like the fire has
affected the PCT from Bare Mountain Canyon to Mattox Canyon, about 30
miles of trail. It is still moving east toward Sulpher Springs Canyon.
This affects the camp areas Mt. Pacifico, Big Buck, Messenger Flats, and
the North Fork Ranger Station.
