[pct-l] How much water????

For planning purposes, I'd err on the side of excess. The end of April, the first of May is a funny time in San Diego County. It's been known to rain at the ADZPCTKO, the last weekend in April. In the Lagunas, that rain has been a dusting of snow, with fairly cool temps. But May can also have backcountry highs in the high 80's, with full sun exposure. Some hikers have even reported rain in the San Felipe hills.

Only you can determine how much water you like/need, balanced with how many miles you like to hike on a daily basis. I'm an old foof, and like my fluids. My personal rule of thumb is to carry a quart (old school) for every 4 miles I plan to walk. On the rare occasions where I'm not drinking that much, I can pour the excess over my head, share with someone not as fortunate, etc.

You may be a fast walker, and plan to cover the miles to Lake Morena in seven or eight hours. And the weather might be cloudy and cool. Three or four quarts is not unreasonable. But you might just want to throw in a two quart empty Platy, just in case you get to Campo and find that the sun is blazing, and the air is hot and dry.

As I was typing this, Jim (PITA), posted his thoughts, and they pretty much mirror my own. At this stage, next year's weather is a crap shoot, but it shouldn't be a scary one.
