I would like to thank all the thru-hikers that participated in the start date survey. You guys are great and I can't wait to be part of this group this year.

Below are the results from your participation.

In 2009 thru-hikers departed the border tightly grouped around the last weekend of April. About 50% of the hikers departed the border in a one week window between April 21 and April 29 in the year 2009. It appears that this season about 50% of hikers will be departing the border in a two week window between April 19 and May 4. About 25% of the thru-hikers will depart earlier, between April 5 and April 19. It is estimated that about another 25% of the thru-hikers will depart later between May 4 and May 18.

This survey data suggests that PCT thru-hikers are going to be more evenly distributed along the trail than the previous year.

Paul

I like the idea, but I don't think it'd work in practice...too many snake spottings already this year among myself and other section/thru hikers I've met. I think the whole trail would be a big pattern of "S"'s.

Also, I don't hike with glasses, so every snake I see is treated like a rattler even if it doesn't rattle. Anyway, my last snake sighting was yesterday, although I met a Swiss hiker today that said he spotted 6 snakes between Barrel Spring and the hills before Warner Springs.

If the squiggly line that was being used last year was misread as just being the result of someone dragging their trekking pole, why not make the mark clearer? Lets make something that looks more like the letter "S", maybe even two letter long, a sort of S on top of an S with a little intentionality. In this way it would be more recognizable and just as easily erasable. Just a thought.

I think the water report will reflect this soon, but I wanted to let people know that Barrel Spring is still contaminated. The whole thing is contaminated from the source to the pipe at the bottom. There are 5 dead rodents floating in the source that are trapped due to the design of the "improvement" installed just before kickoff last year. According to the greatest water resource in this area, Barrel Spring will remain contaminated until the previous improvement is fixed.

As to those that installed the improvement, gratitude was expressed by the person I talked to, but unfortunately the help that was offered didn't work out as expected. I feel the same way.

Anyway, if you want to drink it, treat the water very well.

Len, my dad drives public transit in Washington and reports that every
county has "connector" shuttle services open to the general public. In
theory if you're patient enough, you can take public transit across the
state. I've never tried it.

The sticky wicket, from what I can tell, is Trout Lake itself and Klickitat
County. The chain works pretty well to get you to the PCH in Skamania County
where it crosses Bridge of the Gods, but Klickitat County doesn't post their
info so I'm not sure how it works there and if it connects all the way up to
Trout Lake. As a more rural area, it may be easier or harder to just get a
ride.

If you were going to do the public transit route (assuming you flew into
Portland, the route would look like this:
* Take Max, Multnomah County's light rail system (trimet.org), to Gateway
Transit Center (check me on the exact center, but I'm pretty sure this is
the right one), and connect to C-Tran, Vancouver's transit system.
* Take C-tran (C-tran.com across the Columbia and east, transferring to
Skamania County's public transit (
http://www.skamaniacounty.org/public_transit.htm).
* Take Skamania County's public transit to Stevenson. ... this is where it
gets iffy ....
* Arrange for a ride through Klickitat County Senior Service's dial-a-ride
program or find out from them what other arrangements are available (They
may know of other shuttle options). The website for senior services
ishttp://www.klickitatcounty.org/Senior/ContentROne.asp?fContentIdSelected=-2036100161&fCategoryIdSelected=1478042651&fX=X

Also, try Greyhound. The airport's in NE Portland and the same Max light
rail system in Portland will get you downtown to right in front of the bus
station for about $2.

Then again, if I had a car, I'd be happy to drive you - It's just across
from Hood River, so not that far from us here in Portland. Maybe someone
will be able to offer some trail magic.

Oh so you think you're
too fat
too large
too small
too uncoordinated
too coordinated
too old
too young
too afraid of the snow
too unafraid of the snow

That doesn't excuse you from not taking Ned's snow navigation course. Even
people who like the snow (me) gain a lot more confidence to hike and
navigate in the snow.

Just do it!

Hello,
Swimming suite : I read on this forum that some hotels in resupply towns have swimming pool, or there are lakes along the way. But when I look at hikers' gear list (specially women) I don't see any kind of swimming suit. So I wonder, is it the 21st of june naked day every day on the trail ?

PCT forum :I think it is judicious to keep on receiving mails from the PCT forum during the trail, for all the informations it brings, but how to manage so many messages with a PEEK ?, it may burn out the battery very quickly. Former hikers have an idea about that ???

Before doing the AT in '06, I read that past hikers often experienced a temporary numbness or tingling in the soles of their feet, from the constant impacts.? Some said the condition continued long after the hike ended.? I'm in the second category.? The balls of my feet and toes still have residual numbness and tingling - not much but enough to be noticable.? There's no pain, so I'm not worried.

I'm taking an informal survey.
After our first year of long distance hiking, Ray started to experience
??nerve problems in his feet that have persisted to this day. ?He has a
sense that his feet are under pressure, even when barefoot, and
sometimes a persistent tingle. ?Not anything that would be described as
pain.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Both of us have gone to larger shoe sizes. ?In my 30's I wore men's size
8 running shoes and hiking boots. ?Since our first year of long distance
hiking (1996)I have been wearing men's size 10 1/2. ?Ray has gone from
size 11 to size 13 in all his shoes.
Is this common? ?Only among hikers? Or is this a natural consequence of
aging?

I am a professed Pacific Crest Trail hoarder. Can't help it. I have gathered
up any and all PCT information when I realized I could ride the PCT over 5
years ago. Since I am responsible for another life while on the trail, I
wanted to cover all bases in overkill. Last year I used Eric's Atlas as well
as Halfmile's maps and Postholer's & morethanamile's. I felt I needed all of
these including researching the Wilderness Press books. I carried segments
of everything inside my shirt all the way until somewhere around Cook and
Green Pass. There I lost that segment research and panicked but I soon
realized that I had the basis from all my diligent research, the generosity
of others and the many past miles to be just fine and both Issy and I were.
My point is when someone starts on this journey and hasn't ever been on the
PCT "ALL" information is greatly appreciated. I can't tell you how many
times I emailed Halfmile asking for his help and he responded immediately
with assistance with such mundane things as GPS questions and even with
moving my horse trailer. Postholer opened up a Stockman's page at the
request of Mendorider and maintains that at no cost...Eric has given us
(horse people) a perfect size guide with good water references.

We have GOLD in these people...no one is going to get rich on PCT books,
maps or any of it. But they do it to help us.

News alert: there are dead things in most natural water sources. This one
may or may not be worse, but dead critters are everywhere, and if they
aren't dead, they certainly still pooped in the water.

At Round Valley on San Jacinto (not on the PCT) there is a backcountry
ranger station with a faucet nearby. That faucet is signed saying filter the
water. Few do so, including at least some who work up there. But, the spring
source has been found to have critters in it consistently.

Last year I reported when dead things were found in water holes. The list
got long. I fear such reporting leads many to believe that if dead things
are reported, then that source has no dead things and therefore is safe to
drink untreated. Not true.

The work done at Barrel Spring, even if it traps critters, IS an
improvement. Before the work was done, the pipes would constantly clog,
causing the pipe to stop flowing. The clog was typically oak leaves, which
are high in tannin. When that happened, hikers would either go without,
filter (or not) from the trough (which unfortunately a few think is a
bathtub), or go up to the source spring, resulting in more contamination and
siltation there.
The intro page to the water report does mention that dead critters are
found in many water sources. The sign at Barrel Springs does say to treat
the water.

On a related note, taping a paper sign to a tank or official sign about dead
critters may be ok, but writing directly on an official sign, tank, etc., is
not. That dead critter may be removed, but the ink marker will remain beyond
that.
