[pct-l] ice axe

I was just wondering when and were one might carry an ice axe before
kennedy meadows? I am flying into san diego on the 27th and would pick
one up there if needed south of kennedy, or just order one and have it
ship to me around long pine. Any comments. Also considering this years
greater than average snow fall and me not being experienced in snow
hiking would crampons be a help or a danger? Thanks all
