Looking for some help.
Some friends and I are coming to Vancouver Is. in August and we are
looking for a good 2 day backpacking hike along the PCT. Out and back with
maybe a beach campsite would be ideal. I am open to any suggestions given.
Thank you in advance
Red

Wing It and I went to the snow course this year and learned a lot and had a
good time... highly recommended for those who are unsure of their snow
travel skills or snow way-finding. We live in the Palm Springs area, and
wouldn't mind helping out thru-hikers who need help getting to/from the snow
course (although we have a small car, so space is limited).

Don't Panic

Yes,
MendoRider is right.
I have used mothballs for many years when I hike with friends or the
Scouts and they work.
The bears seem to stay away from the campers with the mothball odor and
go after the campers with the cosmetic odors and the food odors instead.
I have been accused, on this list, that all I'm doing is sicking the
bears on the other campers.
I say "Better Them Than Me".....besides, everybody is responsible for
their own bear precaution.
I use pieces of stockings (they allow the odor to escape freely) to
attach a mothball or two to my pack, bear bag or whatever and place a
few loose ones around my tent or sleeping bag.
In the morning I place all the mothballs in a zip lock and put the bag
in my sleeping bag.
Gives the bag a slight mothball odor, and me also, to keep the bears
away and mask that on the trail to long hiker odor.
The slight mothball odor is less offensive than the on the trail to long
hiker odor and makes the other hiker dudes wonder why all the hiker
babes hang around me, instead of them.

So, if you girls get tired of your smelly boyfriends, come and see me,
JMT Reinhold with the mothball odor.

I do not, however, use mothballs when I go "STEALTH" on my solo "JMT
Fast Packs" for the simple reason that the mothball oder may give away
my position and defeat the "STEALTH" prime objective of staying undetected.

I used them during my ride (by horse) of the PCT. I first learned of them from friends who are canoeists and who have taken several trips in Alaska and the Yukon. In parts of the Yukon, I was told, that moth balls in cotton tobacco sacks (2 or 3 in each) are called "bear charms". I usually carry about 20 of these. I store them in an OpSak when not in use. I also store my food and my horse's processed food in OpSaks and am careful not to get food smells on the outside of the sacks. At night I surround my saddle and saddle bags and all of the food sacks with bear charms. I also surround my tent at a distance of about 10 feet. I would like to point out that, while bears are repelled by moth balls, rodents are not. Fortunately, not even rodents can smell food stored inside an OpSak.

Hi guys,
I lost a lot of money on the trail some time ago.
A tear in my pack caused a lot of money to be scattered all over the trail.
I consider it to be "FLOATSAM" not "JETSAM", since I lost it and did
not throw it away deliberately.
Therefore I am the rightful owner of all the money found on the trail
and would greatly appreciate if it is returned to me.
I will pay a reward for any money returned to me.
You can tell if it's my money by the pictures on its face.
I only carry money with the following pictures on it:

$1 Washington
$5 Lincoln
$10 Hamilton
$20 Jackson
$50 Grant
$100 Franklin

So, if you find any money with the above pictures on it, it belongs to
me and should be returned to it's rightful owner.
Like I said, I will pay a reward for any money found on the trail and
returned to me.
BTW....you can keep the $1 bills as an advance on your reward.

Thank you for your cooperation and honesty.

Anxiously awaiting the return of my "FLOATSOM" money

Marine law has a number of ways of helping people deal with wrecks,
flotsam, jetsam, etc. that can be found in the sea. Jetsam refers to
materials that are purposefully thrown over board (jettisoned) . Flotsam
refers to materials that float off a ship without having been thrown in
deliberately. A shipwreck usually results in Flotsam and not jetsam.
Generally speaking, jetsam is the property of the finder, while flotsam
remains the property of its original owner. I can only assume that these
laws arose after centuries or millennium of the principals of "finder's
keeps" failing to reduce the chaos in society. I would think that it
would be fairly easy to discern those items found on the trail that are
flotsam (packs, poles, cameras, etc.) and those that are jetsam (corn
spaghetti, clif bars, giardia encrusted undergarments, etc.). Can we all
agree that the trail flotsam still belongs to the original owner until
proven otherwise? It would lift the trail community at least up to the
level of the first maritime laws of the 1400's. TrailHacker

Say Switchback,
I just came back from Heaven....Sky Bum Heaven that is.
I skied last week in five feet of fresh powder on top of 400+ inches of
prior powder with the JMT at my feet and Banner, Ritter and the Minarets
looming in the background.
If that ain't Heaven,..........then it's the closest thing to it.
I'm so exited, I finally got to see Heaven...my future permanent home.

How do I know I will go to Heaven you ask?
I know because the Marine Corps told me so.
I distinctly remember the old "GUNNY" telling us..........."All
Marines go to Heaven.....because they already served their time in Hell".
So there, that's how I know! ! !
Are you satisfied now???

I know, from the ranting and raving on the list, that some of our list
members probably will not make it to Heaven.
I say......"DO NOT DESPAIR".....there is hope.....you can always join
the USMC....if they'll take you.
Then you are guaranteed to go to Heaven, for you will have already
served your time in Hell.

AnnA,
It is nice to hear you acknowledge your appreciation for Switchback's trail
humor on the list.
He is the spark plug on the list, who brightens up the list by injecting
occasional trail humor.
Zip lock bags & weather reports can become somewhat boring after a while and
the list needs someone like him.

Look him up at the KO...he will be at the Pirates Roost at site #22.
I will not be there this year....I am nursing a couple post surgery women.
He is as sweet as can be, has a heart as big as the mountain of a man that
he is and will do most anything for his fellow hikers.
He is not as good looking as I am, but he makes up for it with his size.

Word of caution, beware of his.....YOOOHOOO...I HAVE SNICKER BARS!!!
It is a trick to lure cute, innocent girls, like you, to his Pirates Roost.

JMT Reinhold

Hi folks. Let me say a big THANK YOU for all the helpful information, for
the funny entertainment and for the motivation for training and doing this
hike! I really appreciate this list. And a "sorry", for those who may not
always have gotten a personal answer. This is for you: THANX!
So now I'm looking forward to meet you down there at the KO. I'm courious to
discover the face and character behind your name's grey letters on the
pct-l!
AnnA

Switchback replies: I thank Unsupported for his kind comments. But I must say I am not a spark plug. I am a trouble maker and the IED (improvised explosive device) of this list. My Viking type exploits on the PCT are legendary. The List Moderator has me on his Poster Watch List. And rightfully so. I thank you.

By the way, I am at Warner Springs Resort right now. It is cold and wet. I have started writing my world famous After Action Report on my laptop. It is going to be fantastic. I will post it Sunday, when I return home. You will get Switchback's unique insights to the 2010 Kickoff.
