What surprizes me is that so many of the UL hikers have beards
and lots of hair. Hair does have weight!

Yes Kevin,
We hiked in snow on Mount Wilson at Sedona and it was very cold...but
the spectacular view made it all worth it.
And yes Kevin, the long hair will keep you warm, even hot on a warm day
and you can't take it off.
Say Switchback, what is all this " Bald Eagle" Jazz?
Contrary to common belief the Bald Eagle is not bald its head is covered
with white feathers similar to my head which is covered with, some folks
say, gray hair (except for on small spot in the rear) I call it beach
blonde.
Carol,
I did not get your message until after I returned...Bummer...would have
loved to get together with you in Sedona.
And yes, Switchback would have been in the way....besides, that big
"BUFFOON" does not know how to treat his women right....long suffering
Mrs. Switchback is proof of that.

If he hiked Humphrey, he did. But if he hiked in Sedona, it was probably
very nice.

I wonder if JMT Reinhold got snowed on. It's all white this morning in
Flagstaff :) The argument that less hair means less weight may not be
valid. I contend that more hair means I can get by with a lighter hat,
or no hat at all! I say this partial tongue in cheek. I have a long pony
tail, and I actually do "use" my hair in the backcountry. It can serve
as a scarf, ear warmers, and mosquito protection. :) And I don't often
carry an insulating hat into the backcountry. A bandana and a lot of
hair keep my head warm. :)

Greetings Bald Eagle Reinhold, glad you have discovered yet another way
to shave ounces off of your hiking load. Let me know when you make it to
Sedona and I will treat you to lunch if I am around. No switchback, you
can't come too.

Sedona for a week...I got that sudden urge to go for a walk in the
woods. Say Switchback, as I was admiring myself in the mirror the other
day I noticed that my hair is tinning out and I noticed a small bald
spot on the back of my head. This upset me terribly....I mean a bald spot
diminishes your "Macho" image and makes you less appealing to the women.
So, as I was sitting there all depressed and feeling sorry for myself, a
bright light came on and I realized that hair weighs and therefore the
less hair the lighter and from a true ultra-lighters point of
view...."every oz. counts...and the lighter the better". All of a sudden
I am not depressed anymore. Well, got to go now, Sedona is calling me.
Switchback replies: Yes, Sedona is a great place to train for the PCT. I
bet you come back from there saying things like, "Ohmmmmmm......" You
will be known as the SunPose Bald Eagle Reinhold. I can see it now.
During the 2011 PCT campaign, some hikers will be barreling down the
trail and come upon you tied up in a yoga knot doing the Complete
Breath. And you cannot get yourself untied. Most likely they will kick
you out of the way and keep heading toward Canada as you bounce down the
slope. Or they will auction you off to the next Indians they meet on the
trail. You could be used as a baldheaded basketball around their camp.
That would be cool. Be safe and have a good time.
