I think that what you need to be concerned about is the frequency of water sources.  The desert ends at the Thachapi's and the temperature goes down as the altitude goes up, but there are some shadeless areas between there and Kennedy Meadows, after which the frequency of reliable water gets much better.  There will be streams all through the mountains so you won't need to carry a lot of water with you as you can just refill frequently.  Your maps and halfmile's SoCal water reports will help you determine how much you will need to Carry.
