It's WAY easier to do the math with the metric system.  Everything is in base-10.  With the English system, it's all base-whatever-the-fruitcake-some-yahoo-back-in-the-middle-ages-decided.  The English system is cumbersome at best and only makes sense when taken in the historical context of origins of the various measurements.
