[pct-l] Butter Powder

Good morning, Eugene,

As a cookless hiker I use lots of powdered butter and/or cheese. I used to
buy the product in cans from Walton Feed at http://waltonfeed.com/ -- an
excellent source for hiking food -- but I recently found that a local food
store chain, Winco, sells powdered cheese in bulk. Strangely, I can’t tell
much difference between the powdered butter and the cheese. Both are pretty
much like the stuff in the packet that comes in the Mac ‘n Cheese box.

I carry about ¼ cup of the powder in a small, “snack-size” Ziploc bag, and
for a meal I pour in water – or even better, oil if it’s available – and
kneed the contents for a minute or so till it’s smooth. I use it as a dip
for my dry, brown carbohydrate substances or I just bite off one corner of
the sack and squeeze it out like toothpaste.

I use powdered refried beans in a similar fashion. I used to dry my own
refried beans – it’s really quick and easy – but now I buy them in bulk from
Winco. The beans won’t readily reconstitute well with oil so I use
water. That’s
OK because when I hike cookless I don’t carry oil anyway. A favorite is to
combine the sack of bean powder with the sack of cheese powder and mix it
all together. That’s a good place for a cookless hiker to mix in some hot
sauce as well.

I sometimes carry little individual packets of condiments, and my runaway
favorite is mayonnaise. Real mayo has a very high oil content for added
Calories, and I can squirt it on most of my food basics. Sometimes I just
take a bite and squirt some mayo into my mouth. Most other condiments
enhance flavor but don’t increase the Calorie level very much.

Bon Appétit …
