As some folks noted, if you love your job, don't surprise them with a "See
ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!" For one, you probably won't get a very good
recommendation when you get back - broke, but zen-like - from your
five-month fairy tale and for two, as was noted, why injure the ones you
love?

If you work at Taco Bell, one week's notice is fine. But you have to be the
judge of your skill set, how long it took to train you to be efficient, etc.
If it takes a month for someone to get up to snuff in your position, then
you better give the company at least a month and a half or two months, so
maybe they can even use you to train your replacement after they put out ads
and conduct interviews to find said guy/gal.

Of course, if you hate your job and the people you work with, give 'em the
traditional two weeks just to say that you were the bigger man/woman. If
they fire you or let you go early, who cares? In that situation, it'd be
like a bonus vacation, and you can always use an extra week to make sure
your supplies are in order.
