A good "transition" shoe from boots is the Merrel Moab Ventilator Mid (which
is essentially a boot version of the shoe of the same name). I've hiked many
thousands of miles in the Merrel Moabs (the low-top version) and plan on
hiking in them again this year.
They are great shoes and they are pretty tough compared to some of the
lighter weight trail runners. I've found they only need to be replaced every
800-1,000 miles (because the sole wears out). They are also available in
wide sizes for those of us who have flattened our feet into flippers from
too much backpacking.

For over 50 years I had hiked in "boots". Last year when getting ready to
hike the PCT everyone told me light trail hikers or running shoes were best
for hiking the PCT. I went with light hikers and got along very well with
them. They were very popular on the trail. Plan on replacing them every 500
to 1000 miles. Find a comfortable pair and use them. If you like them,
buy 3 or 4 pair and have them ready to be sent to you as you need them.

Now from what Ive read it seems that the majority of you long
distance hikers are trail runner wearing types.. Maybe I havnt
graduated to them yet (Ive never been out for more than a couple of
days) and will see the light once I get out for some longer mile days
and longer trips but Im not "mentally" ready to do a long trip in
them and I am trying to find lightweight mid hiking boots for my
upcoming John Muir Trail trip this summer. Something with ankle
support and rugged enough to make it the distance. New boots have
been the biggest challenge of my gear gathering. Any tips and advice
would be very greatly appreciated.
