Very inappropriate response in my humble opinion but I guess it should not be surprising.  If you feel a need to get violent, why not take it off list or at least into the state of mindlessness.  I hear there is a nice trail there.

encouraging others. 
* Elwood is doing all hikers a disservice by violating the rules, but 
apparently doesn't care as long as he gets to do what he wants to do.

Per this description sounds like he should be taken out and shot.
