I checked the regs the first time I traveled by plane after 9-11, and (working from memory here), they said that hiking poles had to be checked. Haven't checked the rules in a while....

Subject: [pct-l] Hiking Poles
I've taken my hiking poles carry-on several times, I just put my whole pack w/poles into a duffle bag and they never have
stopped me. They are carbon fiber poles so maybe they don't show up on the screens? I mail my knife and tent
steaks ahead (actually I forgot once and carried both on and was not stopped either ;-/ ).

The road goes ever on and on...
