The Kick-Off is a great event to attend if you are planning your hike for
2011.  I went last year (and am hiking this year).  There were vendors there
with equipment that you won't find in the stores.  I got to experiment with
a variety of packs and finally found one that doesn't hurt (so much) to
carry a load in.  A number of tent/tarp people are there.  And so on.
It was also fun to see the presentations, whether on water on the trail,
food/cooking, bears, Switchback's talks, etc--it was great learning and
helped focus me on what I needed to do next to get ready.  The evening
programs, with photos of the trail were fun.
The best, IMHO, was the last morning...the breakfast 'chefs' were singing
'the 12 days of hiking'!
Watch this site or check the link already provided below as the date gets
closer.

All the KO stuff for this year will show up here, eventually:

Yes, you do have to sign up and make camping reservations.  All that
will be handled through the above site.  There will also be a ride
board where you can offer assistance.
