Respectfully, I'm not sure I agree with Stephen's rules, but I suppose that
just further illustrates the personal perspective point.  I used my poles at
all times on all terrain, especially the rocky stuff and found them
advantageous on log crossings as well.  They saved me from falls far more
often than they caused them.  

Bipedalism may have helped us poke our heads above the grass and hunt big
game, but our four lagged friends still have the advantage crossing
mountains, not to mention their chiropractic bills are a lot lower.
