[pct-l] SOBO PCT border crossing.........

Yes, but the closest access point on the US side is at Harts Pass, about 31 miles to the south. I've done that section out and back. There is no public transportation of any kind from either Seattle or Spokane into that area. The nearest town of any size is Winthrop, Mazama being little more than a wide spot in the road with a very nice resort/store/gas station. Harts Pass is a popular access point into the Pasayten Wilderness for hunter and fishermen camp

I've driven the 18.7 mile dusty, rocky snake of an access road between Mazama and Harts Pass three times and personally consider it too hazardous to walk safely, although it could be done. The road was blasted out of the side of a mountain to serve the mines many years ago. It is virtually all uphill (to the pass) and loaded with blind curves. Passing another vehicle is challenging but doable; just go slow. The only level spot is at Dead Horse Curve. Hitching down from the pass is easy enough but back up can be a slow process as the road only goes to Harts Pass and the Slate Peak lookout further up.

Some bureaucrat or politician somewhere obviously has their panties in a twist over equal treatment under the law. The more we complain, the bigger issue it will become. For right now, just let the USFS and the PCTA work it out with the BP, which has much bigger fish to fry.

Is a possible solution for SOBOs to get on the trail as close as possible to the border, hike north to the border, step on it, but don't cross it, and turn around? Would that be ok with the border patrol folks?
