At that time of year I would take my tarptent but I would bring a warm bag, 15 degrees at least. It could get pretty chilly in September! The only thing you can say for sure about the Sierras is that any kind of weather can happen at any time of the year so being prepared with what you need based on your skills and comfort level is the most important thing.
