I don't live in CA, but you might ask the folks at REI about such classes, or the local chapter of the Sierra Club.  The Red Cross has first aid classes.

  I live in Oakland CA and I would like to take my 14 year old son next 
spring. One of the things I would like to do before we go is to take a map 
reading class and first aid wilderness or other. Can anyone suggest some 
places in the Oakland area to take these classes.
