I fit all the CA OR and WA 24k topos on my Garmen Oregon on a 2GB card by leaving out the quads for the areas not reasonably near the PCT, mostly urban coastal areas.

Granite,
If you use the free Gramin POI loader software here:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/
You can easily load all my 6000 + waypoints as custom Points Of
Interest (POI) on the micro SD card and get around the 1,000 waypoint
limit. POI's require little space on the memory card.
You can load all the Garmin maps for CA, OR and WA on a single micro
SD card along with the POIs. If you are using the newer more detailed
1:24,000 maps, a single 4 GB microSD card will be required. A 2 GB
micro SD card works for the less detailed 1:100,000 maps.
If you go with the 4GB microSD card, run Garmin's web updater to
update the firmware in your GPS, as support for > 2 GB cards on the
Vista was added with an update about a year ago.

Also, you will need to go into map setup and set the zoom level user
points are displayed on the GPS map screen. With the default "auto"
setting the custom POI's you load into the GPS usually don't display
on the map screen. If you have any questions let me know.
