[pct-l] GPS on the Mac

Garmin maps and POI loading works extremely well on my Mac. Garmin
Basecamp is a fantastic program. I use Garmin 24k maps on a 2GB SD
card. Loaded all of Colorado last year on the CDT. Split the 6000
waypoints into 12 tracks using GPS Visualiser (free web software).
This removes un-necessary points (eg if the path is fairly straight
or if points are very close together) and allows the 500 waypoint
limit for Garmin HCx tracks to be met. You dont want the Garmin unit
saving the 6000 point track into 500 waypoints by itself into a file
of 500 points (too coarse).

As for Mags, we all know he is an architect and he draws all his
drawings by hand in ink and does not use a CAD system?
Really??? :-)
Joking aside, its OK to do the hiking without a GPS and you save
weight and have fun navigating. But really the GPS toghether with map
and compass for overview and backup is really quite good also.
I love seeing the little triangle, that represents you actual
position, remaining firmly located on the red line of the track.
best regards to all.

PS: you still need to be able to navigate even with a GPS.
