[pct-l] Water purification

Not a stupid question, just one of the topics that comes up repeatedly.
In 2010, there were a few truely icky water sources, but most did not seem
all that bad.  We started around kick-off; presumably things might be worse
with a later start as sources dry up.  We used a filter in S Ca, switched to
chemicals in N Ca, but you could probably get by in S Ca with bandana
filtering and chemicals.
We usually hike in AZ, so we have different standards perhaps of what
constitutes good water.  Also, despite being careful with water, I did pick
up giardia somewhere, perhaps because of poor hygiene (no easy way to clean
up).
