i carry the SPOT 2 , smaller and lighter than the original spot. gives the
illusion of safety ; )

really though the unlimited texts feature is awesome, every time i make camp i
drop a beacon and friends and family love tracking my progress.

you can send two different unlimited messages mine say "making camp for the
night we're safe and happy love you all" and "dropping a beacon here - taking a
break or enjoying the view" which i use when i find a spot i am taking photos

doesn't weigh much, sends 300+ pings on 3 AAA's. i found it well worth the
weight if only to upload my progress to my facebook friends ; )

i got very little cell service using verizon.

Subject: [pct-l] Emergency Devices

I am planning a PCT NOBO thru hike in 2011. I have always prefered to
communicate to family that I am ok by calling using a calling card when I get to
town. This is my first long hike and my family is strongly encouraging me to
carry something for emergencies. My family would like me to carry some kind of
emergency device. They are willing to pay the cost. I am curious as to what
others have carried ( cell phone vs SPOT) and the pros and cons of these devices
or others.
