FYI in planning a PCT thru-hike...

The only areas on the PCT which currently have bear canisters 'required'
are in the CA Sierra - and in case you're wondering exactly where canisters
are 'required', see <http://sierrawild.gov/bears/food-storage-map>.

For a PCT mileage breakdown of the 'required' areas, plus more bear canister
info, see the FAQs at <http://postholer.com/faq.php#Canister>...
I'll be updating all the bear canister links & info within the next month...

Sierra food storage lockers ('bear boxes') along with the PCT trace can be seen
at <http://postholer.com/gmap/gmap.php?trail_id=1&markertype=13>.
Please note the lack of bear boxes on the PCT in the Yosemite backcountry (in
Yosemite canisters are required in all of the backcountry)...
There are no bear boxes from Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows (28 miles) and
only one set ~6 miles N of Tuolumne Meadows at Glen Aulin - so one has at least
50 miles from Glen Aulin to Dorothy Lake Pass (northern Yosemite boundary), or
56 miles from Tuolumne Meadows until out of the park...
Hanging food in the Sierra is only 'legal' outside of the canister required areas,
but then only if done properly (10' out from tree trunk & 15' off the ground)...

Hope this helps in your PCT planning!

Happy trails!!!
Jim (PITA)
