Austin and Miner nailed it. Being able to carry an ultralight pack has more to do with 

- what you understand (how things out there work)
- your past training and experience (how things out there did work for you)
- the extent to which you are willing to be limited (what you're willing to do without)

than it does what is actually carried.

The more a person has experienced, the better able he or she is at knowing what they will need in the future, whether it be food, clothing, equipment, or the skills to get the most out of them. 

Sound about right?
