Or put them in a cardboard tube as checked baggage.  Truant did that and her 
poles survived.

It has been hit or miss for me and my poles.  I was able to get them through
LAX security and onto the plane, but was forced to pack them coming home
from Oregon.  If you pack them, make sure they're inside your pack.  The
infamous baggage handlers at Miami Intn'l lost a section of my pole when I
packed it on the outside of my backpack.
